Overview

Roughhouse was founded to give boys something real and substantial to read, something that grounds them in the world and develops their character. Everything in the magazine is written with that goal in mind. While it’s impossible to list every kind of article we have, due to the endless diversity in boys’ interests, we’ve divided our articles into three main categories: History and Adventure, Science and Mechanics, and Games and Fun. Read on below to find out more about each category.

History and Adventure

In our History and Adventure section you’ll find stories of heroism and virtue. Most of them are technically biography and history, but the stories are told with the passion and vivid imagery we expect more from fiction than history. Whether it’s US sailors storming enemy ships in the dead of night or retired police officers reliving the dangerous parts of their careers, your sons will find the best of role models in our pages.

Science and Mechanics

While our main goal is to give boys something good to read, we also want to get them out and doing things, and teach them about the incredible world they get to live in. That’s what the Science and Mechanics section does. Inside are detailed explanations of real world mechanics and science, interesting facts, and projects they can build (some on their own, others with their fathers). Astronomy, engineering, duct tape hammocks and stop-motion movies. That’s what’s in this section.

Games and Fun

Projects, of course, are not the only thing boys want to do, and history is not the only thing they want to read. This section is where we put the stuff that’s a bit light for the other sections, but still, well, fun! Cards and basketball, comics, Lego instructions. There are dozens upon dozens of great things for boys to do that don’t require a computer or an internet connection, and this is where you’ll find them.

To get all this, and support us in bringing it to as many boys as possible, subscribe to Roughhouse Magazine!
